The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has imposed severe sanctions on Plateau United and Bendel Insurance for failing to ensure adequate security and for attacks on match officials during their recent fixtures.
In Plateau United’s Matchday 11 clash with Rangers International on Sunday, November 10, inadequate security led to attacks on both the visiting team and match officials, including injury to one official from objects thrown by supporters. For these breaches, Plateau United faces a deduction of 3 points and 3 goals from their accrued standings, a total fine of N4.5 million, and a requirement to cover damages to the Rangers’ team bus and other losses. Additionally, Plateau United will play their next three home games behind closed doors at the New Jos Stadium.
Similarly, Bendel Insurance is facing 3 points and 3 goals deducted from their accrued tally following incidents in their Matchday 11 fixture against Kano Pillars on November 9. Unauthorised individuals breached security to access restricted areas and assault match officials. The club has been fined N2.75 million, including N750,000 compensation for the assaulted officials, and will host their next three games without supporters at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Both clubs have 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal these sanctions, marking a strong stance by the NPFL against misconduct and security lapses that threaten the integrity of the league.
