Is Victor Osimhen the Best Striker In Europe Right Now?

Why top Europe clubs are not queuing up

by Reginald Uche

A loan from Napoli saw Victor Osimehn join Galatasaray inSeptember 2024, helping them to win their 19th Turkish cup after he grabbed a brace against Trabzonspor in the final.

Victor Osimhen scored 34 goals for Galatasaray to help them win the league. His stats for Galatasaray in the 2024/2025 season show he has played in various competitions with the following statistics:

• Europa 6 goals in 7 games
• Super Liga 24 goals in 28
• Turkish cup 4 goals in3

Osimhen was a key player for Napoli in the previous seasons, even being the top scorer in Serie A in the 2022/2023 season when Napoli won the league.

Victor Osimhen is undeniably recognized as one of the top strikers in Europe. His time at Napoli showcased his exceptional qualities: pace, strength, athleticism, and clinical finishing. He was instrumental in Napoli’s Serie A triumph, breaking records and earning the league’s Best Striker award. Even on loan at Galatasaray, his performances have been noteworthy, with his coach even stating in November 2024 that he believed Osimhen was the best striker in Europe at that moment. Former Napoli teammate Dries Mertens has also hailed him as one of the top three strikers in the world.

WHY AREN’T BIG TEAMS SCRAMBLING?

Despite his clear talent, several factors might explain why Europe’s biggest clubs aren’t in a frantic battle for his signature right now:

Transfer Fee and Wage Demands: Osimhen’s high transfer value (reportedly around €65-€75 million or even higher) and significant wage demands (€11 million a year after tax has been mentioned) could be a deterrent for many clubs, especially those mindful of financial fair play regulations or prioritizing other areas of their squad.

Recent Injury History: Some reports mention that concerns about his recent injury history might make clubs hesitant to invest such a large sum.

Club Priorities and Existing Strikers: Top clubs might already have established strikers or are prioritizing other positions. For instance, Manchester City has Erling Haaland, Real Madrid has KylianMbappé, and other clubs might have recently invested heavily in their forward lines.

Uncertainty and Risk: Big transfers always carry an element of risk. Clubs might be waiting to see more consistent injury-free performances before committing to such a significant investment.

…

With the numbers Victor has posted everywhere he has gone especially in the last 3 seasons and having just only arrived in Gala on loan in September last year, and scored as much and literally handing them 2 trophies, I believe he should be in this conversation
